Hoechst Marion Roussel (previously Marion Merrell Dow) is conducting phase II trials in the USA with suritozole. This agent is a GABA inverse agonist and has potential for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, depression and dementia. HKS analysts predict a first launch in 1999 with potential worldwide sales of US$200 million three to five years after first launch (MAY 1994). Merrell Dow has a European patent claiming this compound.

Chronic administration of suritozole, unlike desipramine, causes a slowing of the firing rate of Purkinje neurons. Suritozole also decreases noradrenergic enhancement of GABA-induced inhibition of these neurons, as does desipramine. These results suggest that the antidepressant activity of suritozole will be similar to that of desipramine, but with a faster onset of action.
