China's methyl ethyl ketone production is about 200-300 tonnes/y and large volumes are imported every year to satisfy growth in the domestic market. In 1996 $38.82 M was spent on imports of 57,592 tonnes. China is now constructing a number of methyl ethyl ketone production plants. Already planned are being built is a 12,000 tonnes/y plant at the Heilongjiang Petrochemical Plant, a 10,000 tonnes/y plant at the Jinan Refinery in Shangdong Province, an expansion of capacity from 1700 tonnes/y to 14,000 tonnes/y at the Fushan Number 2 Petroleum Plant, a 1500 tonnes/y plant at the Zhengdan company in Jiangsu Province, and a 1000 tonnes/y plant at the General Paint Plant of Xi'an which is also capable of expansion to 65,000 tonnes/y of methyl ethyl ketone. Demand (tonnes) by product category in 2000 is forecast to be: coatings 57,600; lube oil de-waxing 12,000; magnetic tape 5000; adhesives 1000; others 700; total 76,300.
